Coefficient of Variation in LW is around 10 – 12%

September 1, 2011

In a flock averaging 60 kg live weight, we can expect a Standard Deviation of about 6 kg (10%). This means that we can expect the following distribution of live weight:

  • about 16% of the flock will be under 54kg
  • 34% between 54 and 60kg
  • 34% between 60 – 67kg
  • 16% will be over 67kg

This strongly backs up the need for farmers to not only to know the average weight of their ewes but also the range and make a real effort to bring up the bottom end.

We can expect that this will reduce the rate of dries and ultimately enhance their scanning result.
